ANC STATEMENT ON ELECTIONS
The African National Congress expresses its gratitude to South Africans for the orderly manner in which they conducted themselves at the polls and braved the elements to exercise their right to vote. Despite challenges experienced, including inclement weather, they exercised patience.
We are confident that the IEC has put in place a robust system with safeguards to ensure that anyone who had any intentions to subvert our democratic system by committing acts of electoral fraud would face the might of the law. In this regard, we support the processes agreed on between the Party Liaison Committee and IEC to follow up on allegations made about irregularities. Also worthy of noting is that there are instances where law-enforcement agencies have already taken decisive action. Public reports suggest that the number of issues raised affect only a fraction of nearly 23,000 voting stations across the country.
We wish in this regard to counsel caution and a sense of responsibility among all political parties and leaders, conscious of the fact that there are legal processes to deal with any disputes. More critically, we should be conscious of the consequences of reckless behaviour on society as a whole.
We have noted that there may have been instances where people were not able to cast their votes due to factors beyond the control of the IEC such as protest actions or inclement weather. We are, however, satisfied that the vast majority of the voters were able to cast their votes.
We are broadly satisfied with the voter turnout which, we believe, represents a sound expression of the vibrancy of our democracy and the seriousness with which South Africans take their political rights.
We have noted with concern an incident where an elderly lady was assaulted by youths in EFF regalia at Cosmo City and we call upon law enforcement authorities to investigate this incident and ensure that those implicated are brought to book.
We also wish to commend the South African Police Service for ensuring safety of the voters and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process by promptly investigating criminal conduct reported.
We call upon all South Africans to exercise patience as the electoral process unfolds. As the ANC, we will continue working within the Party Liaison Committee and IEC to ensure that this process is completed as enshrined in relevant legislation and regulations.
While the actual outcome of the elections is still some way off, as counting and capturing continue, the ANC wishes to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to those who have expressed their confidence in the organisation, who, we are confident, constitute the majority of South African voters.
